Carbon Counter - out now! 08 January 07
Ever wanted an easy guide to how to calculate your carbon footprint? Well, now you have one – and in a handy pocket-sized Collins Gem format. Starting with the essential background on why climate change is the world’s biggest issue, the book then brings together all the calculations you need to make to discover your own contribution to global warming – all you need is a calculator, your gas and electricity bills, transport mileage and another couple of bits and pieces and you’re there. (Here’s my carbon footprint, using these same calculations.)
The next step is to work out how to reduce your carbon emissions – and I divide the book into household, transport and other areas in order to look at the practicalities. If you’re interested in generating your own renewable power, there are also contact details for installers, and details of government and other grants which might be available. Order now (with £1 off, so only £3.99) from Amazon.co.uk.

Blair and Miliband
What arrogance Blair displays when he refuses to reduce his recreational flying. Can someone please explain to him that flying to distant holiday destinations is an entirely discretionary activity. You do not need to do it! Please stop.
And as soon as we have someone in government who appears to really “get it” on global warming he, David Miliband, comes out with disparaging comments on organic food, support for big bio and an attempt to excuse Blair’s flying. What is going on?
I’m wondering if various big vested business interests have knobbled them.
Well done Mark on the Carbon Counter publication. This is the sort of thing we all need because with the dereliction of duty being displayed by our “leaders” maximum individual action is necessary. I’ve just contacted the local Energy Savings Trust people to arrange a Home Energy Check. I’d encourage all to do the same.

Blair's ridiculous comments on flying today
Tony Blair is a man in denial who trots out the same arguments about flying and the UK’s carbon emissions that I would expect from a Daily Mail reader down the pub! He is completely out of touch with the reality of the climate science, despite having attended the Hadley conference in 2005. He also made it 100% clear in his interview in today’s Guardian that all he has really cared about was getting elected – that is now plain to see. I am SO glad TB is on the way out as he is becoming something of a loose cannon. The people I most feel sorry for is his children, especially his youngest, as I am increasingly feeling sorry for all people under 30 the more I find out about the climate science… Tony Blair represents a selfish and unsustainable view of life and way of living and the sooner he goes the better for all of us…
