Is Houston hell on Earth? 22 January 07
I should admit first up that I’ve never been to the place. But then I never want to. Reuters report today that an 18-lane highway is now being built in the west of the city. 18 lanes! That’s nine lanes each way! And at the same time, plans for a commuter train line running parallel to I-10 have been dropped because, according to the former mayor: “You can simply get to your destination better in a car”. And why might that be?
They even have drive-thru dry cleaners in Houston, Texas, you know. Read it and weep.

Don't forget the pick-up trucks
Don't forget the pick-up trucks
24% of vehicles in Texas as pick-up trucks, even though less than 1% actually need them in relation to their occupation. And if you think SUVs are bad, pick-ups are much worse, not only in terms of GHGs, but every other I.C.E. pollutant as well.
My mother, grandparents, and great-grandparents were Texans, and I’m living (in Edinburg) now, but I’m really ashamed of all this—and it’s happening around most of the U.S., public transportation is being cut back and freeways are being expanded.
I wonder if those pick-up owning, freeway driving Texans might consider going on Green Mountain Energy’s 100% wind power, assuming they have the $5 extra per month after going broke keeping their vehicles charging down the super-freeways.
