Six days to go till Kyoto 10 February 05

Worldwide celebrations will mark the Kyoto Protocol’s entry into force on Wednesday 16 February – something I honestly thought I’d never see. The UNFCCC’s Joke Waller-Hunter is jubilant: “The 16th of February 2005 marks the beginning of a new era in international efforts to reduce the risk of climate change”, she says. Messages of support from world leaders and dignitaries – though strangely not George Bush – will be received in Kyoto itself by the Japanese environment minister Yuriko Koike. The ceremony will begin at 10.30pm GMT and webcast live here. In London the historic event will be marked this Saturday with a Kyoto Climate March carrying the flags of all 129 ratifying countries to the US embassy (I’ll be carrying one of them!). Other events around the globe – from Rome to Manila – are listed on the UNFCCC website.

I’m stuck here writing letters to reps. The Climate Stewardship Act is coming up soon. Next week, I think. At least the U.S. should pass that – it came close last time.

I just read an article off ClimateArk about how even the U.S. insurance industry, which stands to lose really big from GW harm, is so tied into oil they refuse to address the issue, while other insurance companies around the world are addressing it.

It’s like we’re suffering from some sort of disease here in America or national psychological disorder.
