European Car Free Day today! 22 September 04
Here’s the slogan: ‘In Town Without My Car!’ Last year 70 million Europeans were involved in this innovative and inspiring project. This year 1544 cities in 40 countries – from Albania to Switzerland – are joining forces to promote a cleaner future without the car. The particular theme is ‘Safe Streets for Children’ – focusing on road safety and safe routes to schools and playgrounds. This is clearly long overdue in the UK: last year 171 children were killed on British roads, and several thousand more injured. Here in Oxford, there’s a special foot and bicycle march taking place in the town centre. I’d be interested to hear of other events around the world – let’s make today a success.

Not really on the topic of “Car-Free Day” (except on the rather tenuous basis of individuals making a difference), I came across this site today. It provides a really useful searchable tool to show the grants available for households looking to reduce their energy use, use solar power etc.
Just put in your postcode, and what you are looking to do, and away you go!

... at least i didn’t sit in a parking lot, with a big SUV engine idling, while I talked on my cell phone, oblivious to my surroundings.

There’s a popular bumper sticker here in the U.S. that says (paraphrased):
“It will be a great day when schools have all the money they want and the military has to hold bake sales to buy bombers.”
The Car Free Day is a wonderful idea. But it will truly be a great day when EVERY day is a Car Free Day, and cars will only be allowed in town on one day of the year!

But my family has two. They are as small and efficient while being as safe and comfortable as we can get by with. If my fellow US drivers had smaller vehicles, I’d like to downsize even more.
