Help the Russians make their minds up 13 September 04

After the horrifying school massacre at Beslan, it’s perhaps excusable that Russia’s President Putin has not given much time to Kyoto recently. But the contradictory messages just keep on coming. First, a Reuters article on 9 September declared that Russia was “still unsure” on Kyoto. Then, only a day later on 10 September, came another: except this time Russia “insists it still intends to approve Kyoto”. Go figure. Meantime, you can help Putin make his mind up by sending him an email – courtesy of Friends of the Earth.

I wouldn’t have known about the FoE campaign if you hadn’t blogged it. It seems to me that some reassurances, mainly by the EU, that Russia’s suffering economy won’t end up hitting rock bottom by supporting Kyoto…but it most certainly will if Kyoto and future GHG cuts aren’t implemented! After all, when the planet’s ecosystems collapse (and probably much of what we call “civilization” with it), the present economic system will collapse with it. So the “hurt/not help our economy” argument is spurious at best. Besides, why do they want to copy AMERICA’S argument, anyway? Our government is a bunch of blithering idiots, and surely Russia’s is not! Right? Right?....

Not sure the FOE email campaign is going to be effective as Putin seems to have turned his email off (see below). I sent an email to FOE to let them know.

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mx1.gov.ru. I’m afraid I wasn’t able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I’ve given up. Sorry it didn’t work out.
