Peru gas pipeline destroys Amazon and climate 09 August 04
In a classic example of how climate-damaging fossil fuel development goes hand in hand with other social and environmental calamities, Peru’s Camisea gas pipeline has devastated Amazonian forest at the same time as threatening the nearby indigenous tribes with “extinction”. Back in the 1980s Shell workers first contacted indigenous people – half of whom later died from diseases they had never been exposed to before. Now history could be about to repeat itself, and indigenous group leaders are desperate for international pressure to be put on consortium leaders Hunt Oil before it is too late. Amazon Watch is running a high-profile campaign, including video clips and sample letters to politicians.
