US states launch major climate lawsuit 04 August 04
In the absence of any movement from the Bush Administration, the cue for climate change action has largely passed to the state level. Now legal chiefs in eight states and New York City have launched a pioneering lawsuit against the five electricity utilities who are responsible for a whopping 10% of US carbon dioxide emissions. The states aren’t asking for compensation, but are instead demanding that these industry top dogs begin cutting back on their CO2 emissions. Catch up on the latest from the excellent Grist Magazine.

It is ironic to realize that as the federal government of the USA turns its back on climate change and global warming, that it’s the united STATES in America that may yet save this country from the worst of the Feds’ folly! I sincerely hope that after January 20, there will be a President Kerry who will get on the same page as the states have regarding our environment!

If you’ve seen it, it’s a bit like the US programme “Law & Order” (one of my favourite programmes) where Jack McCoy sometimes attacks bad social policy through the courts.
