Secrets of the Bush campaign 25 August 04

My aunt, who lives in New Jersey, is a lifelong anti-Republican. So imagine her surprise when she received a letter from Marc Racicot, chairman of the Bush-Cheney ‘04 campaign, welcoming her to their “team” and enclosing a particularly hideous photo of George and Laura Bush (see right). Among the mendacious gems included in the letter (see page 1 here and page 2 here) are suggestions of a conspiracy by the “liberal national media” (does this include Fox News?) to suppress Bush’s message to the American people, and the hilarious claim that well-funded “liberal special interest groups” are amassing enormous fortunes to defeat the poor, underfunded Bush. As if to illustrate Bush-Cheney’s congenital incapacity to tell the truth, the photo is supposedly signed by the president with a “special, personal inscription to you”. The signature is, of course, printed on. For a fascinating analysis of the Bush campaign’s recent tactics – including, almost unbelievably, that of attacking Kerry over his record on the environment – see Grist Magazine’s latest ‘Muckracker’column.

That’s what the neocons’ campaign “strategy” really is. Many dirtier campaigns have been run in American history (read Paul Boller’s book “Presidential Campaigns” sometime!)...but this is the first one where I think the mud that’s being slung is toxic! (Yeah, I know, very punny.) Sometimes I think they do it to make up for Bush’s slip-ups (the man is his own worst enemy). I’m still darkly laughing over his statement that the terrorists are always thinking of ways to destroy the USA, and so are we! (Truer words never spoken!) I seriously dread what they’re going to come up with at their convention next week-it should be classically nauseating. Oh, and by the way, I’m on the Bush campaign’s e-mail list (don’t know why, but I am). I get great pleasure at deleting the messages without ever reading them! Be at peace, though, November 2-and the end of all this crap—gets closer every day!

Here’s a conspiracy theory re the Right that sounds totally paranoid, but terrifying if true. Rachel’s Environmental & Health Weekly (www.rachel.org) has put out a 5 part series about how Bush, the arms and nuclear industries, & the “Armageddon” Christians are all linked in what seems to be a prompting of all out war and environmental destruction. The last in their series is at: www.rachel.org/bulletin/index.cfm?St=2
