Like two addicts fighting over the high price of heroin, presidential contenders George Bush and John Kerry have been vying to outdo each other in promising cheaper gas to the petrol-addicted US electorate. This sorry episode underlines how difficult it’s going to be to ever wean America off its love of cheap fossil fuel: at the moment all the votes are in increasing consumption, not cutting back.
