Sign the pledge to oppose airport expansion 12 October 04

Taking a jet flight is about the most energy-intensive – and climate destructive – thing you can do. So why is the British government, which claims to be concerned about the effects of global warming, proposing to allow massive airport expansion and a doubling of passenger numbers over the next twenty years? Time to wake up Blair: sign the pledge to oppose airport expansion.

I must say that Mr. Blair certainly has a dark sense of humor. The end of cheap oil is upon us, which means whatever planes are still flying 20 years from now (and the bankruptcies just keep on coming these days!), will be charging a King William’s ransom (at least, I assume Wills will be king by then!) for seats-cuz they’ve got to get the small fortune they’re spending on gasoline back with at least a little profit. Very few people in the world will be wealthy enough to fly 20 years hence (heck, it’s out of reach of a lot of us NOW), and that’s presuming that we’re still on the current monetary economic system, which is probably in the Top 5 Most Dangerous Assumptions To Make. A bigger airport? With MORE passengers? Give us the punch line, Tony-it’s GOTTA be a whopper!

Just flicking through the magazines on the EuroStar today & picked up Harpers & Queen, Oct 04 (a first for me, honestly), and I see that Mark Lynas has been profiled as a 21st Century hero. What is that about?! ;-)

Well done.

Whilst I think about it, I must change my bio, as everyone else is much more light-hearted than me.

Peter, I can assure you of many qualities I possess, but “light-heartedness” is NOT one of them! (half a ha)

Can you tell us any more about this article? The publication obviously has good judgement (!), but in what context are they calling Mark a hero? If it’s because he’s willing to tell the world the truth (a heroic quality in anyone anymore!), that makes sense….

Harpers & Queen is all about glamour – and it looks like Mark is trying get the “Jet” out of “JetSet”!

As I recall, there was an article profiling about 20 people who are trying to save the world.

Nice talking to you Vicki!

Mark Lynas

Yes, er, a difficult one to explain, this. It was arranged via my publishers, who thought it would be good publicity for the book, but it is a little embarrassing I admit. I’ve of course never read Harpers and Queen in my life. I’m not doing this for the glamour, honest! ;-)
